3 of the Top Brunch Spots in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is on the foodie map thanks to Rene Redzepi’s gastronomic restaurant Noma, but you don’t need shiny stars to serve amazing food. Here are a few of my favourite hygge* brunch spots from when I lived in the city:

Granola was on my doorstep and is still one of my favourite cafes. French-styled and bustling with locals enjoying breakfast before work or a relaxed brunch at the weekend. As the name suggests, there is granola served with yogurt and berries, and so much more; my favourite being the platter of granola, smoked salmon, avocado, tomato, boiled eggs, pancakes, and toasted rye bread, beautifully representing the Danish breakfast. If you prefer savoury, you can choose from a variety of egg dishes and toasted sandwiches, or the traditional smørrebrød, an open sandwich of rye bread topped with tasty delights such as fish with remoulade or chicken, bacon, and apple salad. A hidden gem and a truly relaxing place to sit and watch the world go by.


The Bottom Line: 5/5 Brookie Stars
One of my top brunch spots ever. A wonderful opportunity to experience Danish food in a relaxed and welcoming environment. 


Bang & Jensen is situated in the heart of Vesterbro, home to some of the best cafes in the city. Formerly a pharmacy, it was transformed into a vintage-styled café with retro décor that is packed with locals appreciating the relaxed atmosphere and fantastisk food. If you miss the breakfast buffet (7:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.) simply fill out the bill at the bar and enjoy any of the breakfast menu items until 4:00 p.m. Looking for something more substantial for brunch? Then why not go for one of the sweet dishes or Danish pastries, or go local with smørrebrød featuring toppings like salmon mousse, avocado, and beetroot, or sample the flæskesteg, roast pork stuffed with walnuts, honey, and herbs. Don’t worry if you don’t eat meat, as there’s a great selection of vegetarian fare as well. 


The Bottom Line: 5/5 Brookie Stars
An authentic and lively little place to sit, relax and watch the world go by while enjoying really good food. A great dining experience in a lively and vibrant neighbourhood. 


I was introduced to The Union Kitchen on a recent visit to Copenhagen and fell in love with the atmosphere and fantastic vegetarian brunch selection. There are the dishes that are served across Copenhagen, like eggs and smørrebrød, but the excitement comes with the less traditional offerings such as fried chicken and waffle with harissa yogurt, and the BEC, a homemade brioche bun topped with bacon, egg, and cheese. And who could resist the fragrant falafel or masala lentils served with broccoli, sweet potato, and poached egg? They even have a vegetarian variation of the traditional Danish breakfast platter; luxurious! This place offers everything that I want from brunch: a cosy atmosphere and a great selection of well-prepared and well-cooked food. It’s definitely worth a visit. 


The Bottom Line: 5/5 Brookie Stars
A hidden gem with a slightly different offering and atmosphere to many of the other Danish cafes across Copenhagen. It’s definitely worth hunting it down if you’re in the Nyhavn/Bredgale area and you won’t be disappointed.
