2021 Father’s Day Gift Guide

Many of us have a special man or two (or more) in our lives, whether it’s a partner, brother, uncle, best friend, grandfather, father or mentor. Sometimes though, it can be hard to find that perfect gift; the one that says ‘I love you,’ without you needing to. I know this is something I struggle with whenever holidays come around because I want the gift I give to be functional, practical and enjoyable rather than gimmicky. This year, I’ve got you covered so you don’t have to struggle.

Here are our recommendations on what you should get for the men in your life this Father’s Day.

For the Jokester

For the guy who needs some new material in his arsenal, check out The Essential Compendium of Dad Jokes edited by Thomas Nowar. Its subheadline says it all: “The Best of the Worst Dad Jokes for the Painfully Punny Parent.” This book comes with original illustrations throughout, dozens of sidebars with interesting tidbits, joke-telling pointers, and profiles of legendary dad jokers, and features cheesy jokes from “I’m on a seafood diet… I see food and I eat it” to “I used to hate facial hair . . . but now it’s growing on me.”

If your guy is in a league of his own when it comes to the jokes or puns, why not grab him a notebook to write down all of his material? This notebook comes with 128 ruled, graph, or blank pages and many different cover designs. Not only is this a fun keepsake to look back on, but you could be looking at the next big comedian. his notebook is the perfect place to hash out all of his zingers!

These are sure to get the laughs… or groans with eye-rolls, coming.

For the One Who Needs Organization

Does he always have cables everywhere but never the right one at the right time? For me, it’s common to hear,  “Have you seen where I left my phone cord? My battery is at 1%!” With a look of disbelief I often reply with, “I don’t know, but here, take mine” and hand it over because I know that 1% won’t last forever. For this kind of guy, I recommend picking up a wireless charging pad or a charging station.  With these gadgets, he won’t be running around looking for the charger or plug, or asking you if you’ve seen it when his battery gets to 1%. The beauty is, these can work for all smartphones and devices whether they’re Android or Apple. We have a charging station in my house now and I must say, it’s really helped to keep the peace.

For the One Who Needs Simplicity

My house is usually “go, go, go” all the time – even on weekends, and especially for my dad. Those moments of pause and stillness are really something and they deserve to be cherished. The best way to do that is with a cup of bliss in your hand. For some, that may be coffee and for others, it could be an alcoholic bevy. For the guy who wants to live in those moments of serenity, give him a subscription for some decadent coffee from Two Bears or boldly flavoured alcohol from Top Shelf Distillers so that these moments are no longer few and far between.

Two Bears is an ethical coffee company that works directly with their coffee farmers to source only the top 1% of coffee beans from across the globe. Since they have direct relationships with their coffee-producing partners, it eliminates the middleman and puts more money in the farmers’ pockets. Two Bears ships to the U.S.A. and Canada (except the territories).

Top Shelf offers a unique, ‘Guide to Cocktailing’ subscription box, which is the perfect mix of educational content, quality products and a welcoming community. Each subscription box includes Top Shelf products from bitters to moonshine to expand your at-home bar, mixers that take your vodka sodas from blah to mind-blowing, garnishes that embellish the flavour profiles of each new cocktail you create, quality bar tools exclusively provided by Fifth and Vermouth and so much more! Plus, a percentage of proceeds will go to Top Shelf’s local charity of the month. Just like Two Bears, Top Shelf works diligently to source only the best ingredients for their product. Everything is within an hour’s drive from its distillery in Perth, Ontario. Not only does buying local provide Top Shelf with high-quality grain and corn, but it also lessens their ecological footprint. From experience, you’ll have to go to the post office to pick up your delivery if you ship with Canada Post so they can check your ID. If that feels like too much, many of Top Shelf’s products are available at many LCBO’s across Ontario.

For the Health Conscious Guy

What better way to treat the health conscious man in your life than to get him fuelling juice from Greenhouse? Greenhouse is a Canadian beverage company whose mission is to offer widespread, sustainable access to high quality plant-based nutrition and wellness. Greenhouse makes their beverages from organic ingredients that are non-GMO and are grown without chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Keeping in the theme of working with only the best, Greenhouse prioritizes produce from local farms and selects the fruits and veggies that wouldn’t win a beauty contest but that are still equally nutritious. Their leftover fibres are used to create things like pizza crusts, dog biscuits and more.

And if he’s looking for a way to change up his workout routine, try the cool Steelhose equipment from FitFighter. FitFighter was founded by Sarah Apgar, who missed the training and camaraderie that came from being in the Army. To get back into action, Sarah joined her local volunteer fire department. She noticed that her  team struggled with physical strain and chaos of fire-rescue operations. Sothe FitFighter steelhose was born. What started out as a fitness program and team drills in the firehouse gym and the truck bay has turned into a world renowned strength and conditioning fitness community. The Steelhose can be lifted, swung, dragged, thrown and dropped, so it’s the perfect companion for any workout type.

For the Grill Master

For the guy who likes to grill in the summer, grab a copy of Rodney Scott’s World of BBQ by Rodney Scott, co-written by Lolis Eric Elie to spark some new ideas for his grilling pleasure. This cookbook contains delectable recipes such as Rodney’s pit-smoked turkey, barbecued spare ribs, smoked chicken wings, hush puppies, and an award-winning whole hog. The beauty of this book is that his recipes make it possible to achieve these special flavours yourself, whether you’re a barbecue pro or a novice. He even offers tips on building your own pit. This is part cookbook, part food memoir. Rodney also shares essays on South Carolinian foodways and traditions, details on how he made his way from the small town where he worked for his father in the tobacco fields and in the smokehouse, to the sacrifices he made to grow his family’s business and the tough decisions he made to venture out on his own in Charleston. While you’re at it, why not get him some new tools for the grill?
