Eat17 is easily accessible by public transit, just a short walk from Walthamstow High Street, you are transported from city storefronts to rural idyll.
Eat17 is nestled amongst cafes, bars, and independent shops. The clientele ranges from singles and couples to small family groups, where everybody mingled amid the outdoor tables.
Our server was attentive and friendly, and despite the place being busy (people hoping for a table in the sunshine), we were not rushed. They don’t take bookings, so be prepared to wait if it is busy.
Presentation, Quality, and Taste
The compact menu has everything that you would expect and prides itself on all ingredients being ethically sourced and offered at a reasonable price. Bread is baked in-house, meat supplied by local butchers, chicken and eggs are free-range, and the fish is caught using sustainable methods. Fruit and vegetables are seasonal and grown locally. The provenance of my food is very important to me so this eco-friendly focus is a huge plus.
I opted for the scrambled eggs served with bacon, avocado and gluten-free toast. The portion size was ideal for brunch and the quality of the food was excellent. Fluffy, buttery eggs and creamy avocado served with perfectly crisped bacon; what more could you ask for when it comes to a classic brunch dish? For me, the addition of the gluten-free bread topped everything off perfectly. Whilst I never go heavy on the carbs, I always like a slice of toast with my brunch, and getting gluten-free bread can be a challenge in some places. My friend chose the same dish (we’re clearly on the same brunch page!) and we happily ate the lot, with hot tea and cappuccino to round it off.
A very relaxing and enjoyable experience, and all located in the heart of Walthamstow Village, a charming place in its own right. Eat17 and Walthamstow Village itself, two hidden gems to be happily explored further.
The Bottom Line: 4.5/5 Brookie Stars
Eat 17 serves up a near-perfect brunch experience for me. The only challenge is getting a table when you go at busy times where you can expect a long wait outdoors. It’s worth waiting for though.
