Setting Yourself a Challenging Reading Goal

Many of us join a book club with the objective of meeting people, reading more books and possibly diversifying the type of books we read. For some people, reading 10-12 books a year as part of a book club may totally satisfy their appetite…but what if that’s your starting point and you’re looking for more? In addition to your book club reading list, why not create a personal reading goal?

Try considering some of the following factors to up the ante on your book reading goals:

Diversity not only relates to genres, there is also a whole range of things you could build into your challenge, such as more female writers, more European writers, more factual non-fiction, or less chick-lit. By being creative with your reading challenge, you can create a diverse and extensive reading list by incorporating just one or two goals for the year.

Here are some examples of tangible goals. I’m sure that you can think of many more, but these are a great starting point:

  •   Read six books by a female author during the year.
  •   Read one foreign language book each quarter (translated!)
  •   Read a themed book per season e.g., a travel-related book in summer, a thriller or horror story tied in with Halloween.
  •   Read two non-fiction books per year.
  •   Read one trilogy per year (that’s three books added to your list right there).

Also, why not share your goals with your fellow Brookies or friends outside of BooknBrunch and ask them to do the same? It’s another great way to expand your list and also encourage friends to read more.

The first step to achieving your reading goals is to start reading! See what we have available in our Brookstore today.
