The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins (240 pages)

I don’t know about you, but I love a good life hack. Core a strawberry using a straw? I’ve done that. Serve condiments in a muffin tin? Genius! Use a clean ketchup bottle to squeeze the right amount of pancake mix into a sizzling pan? Let’s do this!

So when a close friend of mine, a sister searcher of all things joy, fulfillment, and inner peace, mentioned The 5-Second Rule by Mel Robbins, a speaker, TV personality, and coach, I was more than intrigued…I dove right in.

On her website, Robbins shares the simplicity of the 5-Second Rule:

  • If you have an impulse to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill the idea.

It’s not just enough to know what you have to do or why you need to do it, Robbins says that whatever your goals are, show the world, and yourself, that you’re serious RIGHT NOW. How? By counting backward, 5-4-3-2-1, and then taking action.

While The 5-Second Rule is a great read, one of the things I love most about this book is that Robbins knows firsthand the impact the 5-Second Rule can have, as she used it to climb her way out of a deep depression, improve a rocky marriage, stop drinking, and get her life back on track.

She also knew that seeing her vision to fruition meant having complete control and ownership over it. And since people learn from actual application, not just theory, she was sure to include “real-life” testimonials from social media connections that have found success using the 5-Second Rule throughout the book. You’ll be intrigued, challenged, and then inspired to take action.

The only question left is: Are ready to transform your life? 5-4-3-2-1…

The Bottom Line: 3.5/5 Brookie Stars
What it lacks in visual appeal, The 5-Second Rule more than makes up for indirect, applicable advice that will show you how you can change your behavior and live with greater courage every day, cultivating a fulfilling life that puts you in the driver’s seat.
