Let’s Write Together with NaNoWriMo!

Make Your Dreams of Becoming an Author Come True

Ever since I was little, books have held a special place in my heart. They provide an opportunity for an introvert like me to escape into a different world created by someone else; a world much more exciting than the one I was in. For just an hour or less per day, I was transported into many adventures where the protagonists embark on their own journey of self-discovery, incited by conflict, destruction, and, ultimately, reach their destination or self-actualization.

It’s no surprise then that I dream of reaching my own self-actualization goals. When I heard about NaNoWriMo, a nonprofit organization that helps aspiring writers (pretty much anyone) write a novel, I was intrigued. As the weather changes from sunny and warm to cloudy and gray, with puddles of rain forming outside our homes, NaNoWriMo is gearing up to help people prepare to write their first novel. By “pledging” to write 50,000 words in a month, you will be immersed in a world of resources and community…and community is where it’s at.

The Preparation Process

If writing 50,000 words in a month seems terrifying and unattainable to you, do not be alarmed. When you sign up, you will be presented with a dashboard of resources, including a very detailed prep workbook to remove the initial barrier of anxiety and reduce the potential for writers’ block (because they believe that full preparation is the key to success), as well as additional resources on their website to help you prepare to finish writing your book. Additionally, there are community forums that you can browse for ideas and inspiration and to meet fellow writers just like you. Of course, 50,000 words isn’t a typical novel, but it’s a start. I’ve made my pledge and will be participating in November, and will continue until I have my goal of 120,000 words completed as a draft (hopefully) by the end of December.

Hope to see you there!
