The Push by Ashley Audrain (307 pages)

The Push Is A Tense Page–Turning Psychological Drama

Emotionally ravaging, The Push explores the ramifications that come about when a mother’s voice is not heard, nor believed. This novel is a thought-provoking and impactful read; the type of novel that will stay with you.

Blythe Connor is determined to conform to the constraints of motherhood with her new baby Violet. Blythe soon finds herself questioning if something is wrong with her daughter as she doesn’t behave as most children do. Or is it all in Blythe’s head?

Her husband on the other hand, Fox, says she’s making stuff up to cover for her poor attempts at motherhood. The more he dismisses her, the more her sanity evaporates, and the more we question what is really happening.

Blythe and Fox soon welcome a son—and with him Blythe finally experiences what she truly understood motherhood to be. On the surface, even Violet seems to love her little brother. But then life changes instantly which forces Blythe to face the truth.

The Push will challenge everything you think you know about motherhood, what we owe our children, and what it feels like when women are dismissed.

Once You Start Reading, You Won’t Put It Down.

The Push is a dark psychological drama about the making and breaking of a family and one woman’s experience of motherhood being nothing she hoped for, but everything she feared. This debut novel is an absolute page-turner depicting mother-daughter relationships across generations.

The story centers around Blythe who must sleep with one eye open in fear of her own daughter, Violet. Blythe struggles with her complicated feelings for Violet who trashes, cries, and torments her on a daily basis. Is Violet truly a violent child who would harm others?

The Bottom Line: 4/5 Brookie Stars

This is an unsettling read, but beautiful. It doesn’t shy away from parenthood fears and the not-so-fun times of being a mother. The Push is disturbing and addictive with an ending that is haunting. This read was an emotional and provocative read and would be a perfect selection for a book club discussion.
